The Nebraska Medical Orchestra—a partnership between the UNO School of Music and the University of Nebraska Medical Center—honored the late Dr. Joseph Stothert with a musical performance featuring select members of the orchestra. Violinists Jake Son, MD/PhD student, and Rachael Neff, research technician and former UNO music alumna, and flutist Dr. Sarah Holstein, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, were joined by Dr. Mary Perkinson, Associate Professor of Violin and String Education, and Dr. Matthew Brooks, Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Activities in Music & Medicine to honor the longtime UNMC/Nebraska Medicine trauma surgeon who took his own life on March 5, 2021.

This memorial performance was uniquely special in that the Nebraska Medical Orchestra was created to help reduce the symptoms of stress and burnout among medical providers and students by providing a musical outlet for them. Dr. Stothert’s unexpected death is a reminder that wellness is a vitally important focus for hospitals and medical training institutions. The UNO School of Music and the Nebraska Medical Orchestra are honored to be partners with UNMC in an effort to add to the environment of care, improve the campus culture and morale, and support wellness among the healthcare community through music performance.
