The UNO CMTA (Collegiate Music Teachers Association) chapter attended the 2020 MTNA Collegiate Piano Pedagogy Symposium in Muncie, Indiana and presented their poster sessions on January 11th. The chapter’s presentation, entitled “Blanket Forts and Hot Cocoa: Mental Illness and Teaching the Next Generation of Musicians,” focused on how teachers can support their students who suffer from mental illness anxiety, provide a safe space for them in their studios, and find resources for them. The students presenting were Jill Galvin, Lillian Kraft, Marissa Mathia, Aida Soria, Yimeng Xu, and Maverick Harrold. Additionally, Hannah Fisher was selected to present her poster session, “LGBT Who?: Affirming LGBTQ Students in the Music Classroom.” The presentations were a great success and elicited many questions from the conference attendees.
