Dr. Derrick Fox was one of five choral delegates from the United State selected to travel to South Africa on a cultural and musical exchange. During this trip, Dr. Fox visited the historic Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, Johannesburg, the Apartheid Museum and learned about the history and culture of black South Africans at Lesedi.
His musical endeavors were numerous and diverse. Dr. Fox lead workshops with community, professional choirs high school and university choirs in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Potchefstroom. The highlight of the trip was participating in the Kuesta Choral Festival. This festival brings together college choirs from around South Africa to participate in non-competitive concerts and community building events. Dr. Fox was invited to teach an African American Spiritual and discuss the history of the genre.
The International Conductor Exchange Program is intended to spark collaborations between the United States and partner countries. The South Africa exchange was quite successful and conversations about future collaborations between choral organizations in South Africa and the UNO choral program have already begun.
