The nearly 100-year-old Maverick Marching Band, under the direction of newly appointed Director of Athletic Bands Dr. Joshua Kearney, has had a wonderfully active season so far. The MMB began preparations with two weeks of Preseason Camps in mid-August. The Marching Mavericks have already given a handful of performances—including opening for the “End of Summer Concert Series” at Midtown Crossing on Aug. 20, Freshmen Convocation on Aug. 23, and for multiple soccer games.
This year’s field show, which will be performed in exhibition at local and regional marching band competitions, is entitled “Maverick Heroes.” It features the music of heroes of the unconventional variety—including Captain Jack Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean” and the title music from Warner Brothers’ “Robin Hood.” Soccer performances included arrangements of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” and band area graduate assistant Lindsey Bogatz’ arrangement of Walk the Moon’s bestselling hit “Shut-up and Dance.”
The MMB is also looking forward to performing at the opening of the Baxter Arena in October and at the Holland Center for the 10th anniversary celebration of Omaha Performing Arts.
