UNO music faculty members Dr. Christine Beard and Stacie Haneline were featured guest artists at the Puerto Rico Flute Symposium from June 7-14, 2020. Though the pair was originally slated to travel to Puerto Rico for the festival, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the organizers to restructure the event into a free virtual “at home” edition, which boasted over a dozen guest artists from both North and South America and drew thousands of online viewers from around the world.
During the symposium, Beard taught two online flute masterclasses and served on panel discussions that put the spotlight on “minorities in music” and “music entrepreneurship.” The Beard-Haneline duo served as the festival’s closing concert, livestreaming a recital from UNO’s Strauss PAC Recital Hall via YouTube Live, a program which featured a diverse array of 21st-century works by American women, immigrant, and Jewish comp osers.
