The Nebraska Medical Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Brooks, presented a chamber concert in the Buffett Cancer Center. This concert highlighted the highly collaborative aspect of this project between UNMC and UNO School of Music as it featured physician-musicians Dr. Sara Holstein and Dr. Melinda Chen alongside UNO’s Dr. Mary Perkinson on Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4. Another highlight was the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring UNO’s Dr. Kristin Taylor.
While a main goal of the NMO is to serve the medical students, faculty, and staff to minimize depression, burn-out, and associated suicide, the orchestra has also been a means for UNO students to serve as mentors in sectional rehearsals, graduate conducting students to serve as guest conductors, and faculty to serve as mentors and soloists — while building cross-institutional community through music.
The NMO will have another performance on Wednesday, May 1 at 7:30pm in the Truhlsen Events Center in the lower level of UNMC’s Sorrell Center for Health Science Education. This event is free and open to the public.
