The University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Music organized and hosted the First Annual Midwest Double Reed Competition on March 5, 2017. Dr. Susan Hatch Tomkiewicz and Dr. Stephanie Patterson joined the competition as clinicians and judges. The competition included masterclasses as well as afternoon classes in oboe adjustment and reed making. The day concluded with a recital featuring Bassoons Across Nebraska (James Compton, Karen Sandene, Nick Nelson, Joyce Besch) and the guest artists, who were joined by their colleagues Dr. Alina Windell, flute and Dr. Susan Hoskins, piano.
The winner of the 1st Annual Midwest Double Reed Competition was Seth Glidewell, a sophomore from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and student of UNO Artist Faculty, Darci Gamerl.
