On Saturday, February 18, 2023, the Beard-Haneline Duo (comprised of UNO Professor of Flute, Christine Beard and UNO Professor of Collaborative Piano, Stacie Haneline) will perform a recital of music entitled “There is Always Light,” a #flutistactivist initiative concert inspired by the poetry of Amanda Gorman featuring music by 21st c. composers about today’s world with hopes of a brighter future. The program includes 6 compositions written since 2010 influenced by the impact of war, global warming, endangered birds, gun violence in the USA, the celebration of indigenous culture, and the human family by Wissam Boustany, Evan Williams, Herman Beeftink, Leanna Keith, Jacob TV, and Valerie Coleman.

Additionally, Beard will also perform on another recital showcasing music by UNO alum Leanna Keith, including the world premiere of “The Troll and the Fae,” a six-movement modular suite for solo flute and piccolo, as well as a traditional Chinese folk song, “Whipping Horses to Deliver Grain” for solo piccolo from Keith’s book, Journey to the East. This collection of pieces was one Leanna completed while an undergraduate flute student at UNO, for which she transcribed several Chinese pieces into Western music notation; the book was published by ALRY and was named a finalist in the National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition in 2016.
Dr. Beard will also serve as the clinician for the piccolo masterclass featuring the winners of the Flute Society of Washington’s Piccolo Artist Competition.
