Jordan Willis and Dr. Mary Perkinson present “Celebrating Underrepresented Composers, a Collaborative Recital Project,” at the American String Teachers Association national conference. This presentation centers classical music by historically underrepresented groups such as composers of color, women, LGBTQIA2s+, and composers with disabilities. The presenters, a student/learner-teacher/learner team, highlight the intentional process, from conception to execution, of a recital that celebrates these historically marginalized groups of composers while encouraging students and teachers alike to be advocates for diversity and inclusion in their own communities.
Mr. Willis and Dr. Perkinson look forward to welcoming Dr. Gregory Walker composer/violinist, for a 2-day residency that will culminate in a 4/2 event, Powerful Perspectives, Celebrating Underrepresented Composers. The event will feature a premiere by Dr. Walker, and other works by underrepresented composers performed by Mr. Willis, Dr. Perkinson, UNO students and pianist Christi Zuniga.
