Twenty-four music educators recently completed UNO’s Kodály Certification Program.  The Kodály method, developed by Hungarian composer, Zoltan Kodály, uses folk music to develop music literacy through a carefully sequenced system of rhythmic and melodic concepts.  Dr. Shelly Cooper, Coordinator of Music Education and Level III instructor, said, “It’s been a wonderful few weeks watching students expand their knowledge and teaching skills through the Kodály methodology. I’m privileged to have been part of the learning process.”

With daily demonstrations of singing games and folk dancing, teachers are given hands-on experience of how to apply the approach in their classrooms.   First-year participant, Kate Konrad said, “In my own teaching, this method will play a large role in the planning, preparation, and literature selection for my students. After having taken Level I, I feel that I’m better prepared to sequence song literature in a way that will help my students be successful learning musical concepts.”

Beyond learning the method, the program is a wonderful opportunity for students to network, share ideas, and learn together.   In reflecting on his experience, James Holys, said, “Kodály has provided me with great friendships, mentors and a wealth of knowledge that I feel like I am only beginning to use.”
