On Saturday, October 3, several of the members of the UNO Collegiate Chapter of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) attended a professional development workshop sponsored by the Great Plains Orff Chapter. The six-hour workshop, entitled “Pixie Dust?” No, Yearly Planning, was presented by Tom Michalek, an elementary specialist from Hastings, Nebraska. In his fast-paced presentation, Mr. Michalek shared ideas for successful long-range planning and tips for organizing your classroom to maximize the learning time for students. “I can’t believe the HUGE packet of materials we received,” said junior Rosario Nelson. ”I am definitely going to be able to use these resources in my future teaching.” Freshman Sam Kalhorn wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but came away with this reflection, “Frankly, I’ve never thought about elementary education, but after what I learned at the workshop, it’s definitely a possibility. Furthermore, Mr. Michalek really inspired me to think about the important role that music and a teacher can play in a students’ life.”
