The University of Nebraska Omaha’s (UNO) Jazz Ensemble recently completed a highly successful and culturally enriching tour of Uruguay, featuring performances with Latin GRAMMY Award-winning flautist José Valentino. The tour included high-profile collaborations, exposing UNO students to some of the biggest names in Latin jazz.
A highlight was the ensemble’s performance at the MACA Museum, renowned for its focus on sculptor Pablo Atchugarry. Over 1,000 guests attended, and Atchugarry, moved by the performance, invited the UNO Jazz Ensemble to perform at his Miami museum in December 2025. This touching moment highlighted the synergy between music and the visual arts.

In addition to their MACA performance, the ensemble performed at Montevideo’s Mingus Jazz Club and assisted Valentino during a lecture at the museum, showcasing their versatility and dedication to artistic education. The concert concluded with a standing ovation, marking the tour’s success.
An unexpected highlight was a surprise appearance by Ruben Rada, a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, who joined the ensemble for an impromptu performance. This collaboration thrilled the audience and added to the tour’s momentum.

The tour also attracted significant media attention, including interviews on Uruguayan radio and television, further boosting UNO’s visibility. The event was made possible through support from the MACA Museum, the U.S. Embassy, and the University of Nebraska Foundation.
Pete Madsen, director of the UNO Jazz Ensemble, expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments, noting the tour’s impact on both their musical growth and cultural exchange.
